The history of photography in Cologne has already been extensively researched and published. Within the photographed history of the city, women photographers are also of great importance. However, this focus has never been examined in more detail. The exhibition Women Photographers Cologne 1890 – today is the first to focus on the important role that female photographers have played and continue to play. As part of the exhibition project, around 50 well-known but also unknown female photographers who were and are active in Cologne are presented.
The fact that women are not the sole focus of this exhibition is reflected in the 50th anniversary of the International Women’s Year(s), which will be celebrated in 2025. Many things were first celebrated 50 years ago: the UN General Assembly proclaimed 1975 the International Year of Women, the United Nations held a celebration on International Women’s Day on March 8 (and the first UN World Conference on Women was held in Mexico City.
