Now the time has come: the flight to Vietnam is booked, the travel guides have been read, and the transfer from Ho Chi Minh City Airport to Can Tho, directly to my first accommodation on the Mekong, has been booked. My excitement is growing by the minute. The first few days are planned, but what happens after that depends on the circumstances. Will I quickly find what I’m looking for? If I don’t find what I’m looking for in Can Tho, I’ll continue up the Mekong towards the Cambodian border. I hope there will be fewer tourists there and more peace and quiet than in the delta itself. However, I don’t yet know what peace and quiet means in this country. I admit I have some respect for the hustle and bustle.
The trip starts with a Vietnam Airlines flight over New Year’s Eve. I’ve never flown over New Year’s Eve before. Will they make a big deal out of it? Serve champagne? Light sparklers? (hihi)
.
In recent weeks, I have naturally also been looking into the Vietnam War. A truly magnificent documentary has brought me closer to the history, with lots of original film footage and eyewitness accounts from North and South Vietnam and America. It is very, very worth watching.
If you’re interested in watching it (it’s 8 hours long, but every minute is worth it!), you can find it here:

A film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick

Nick Ut also speaks in episode 5 or 6. He talks about his iconic photo of the Vietnamese girl. For the sake of completeness, I am also linking here to the film produced on this topic by the VII Foundation, among others (available on Netflix) https://www.netflix.com/title/82069795
