The “Encanto” series presents the Cologne Opera before its renovation—that is, with the visible traces of its 60-year history as a theater. In a lyrical, musical manner, a figure dressed as Bizet’s Carmen flits unexpectedly and fleetingly through the spaces of the upper and lower worlds. In her work, Anja Schlamann brings the entire opera house onto the stage. The fact that the director and actress are one and the same person—namely, the photographer herself—is what gives the work its special charm.
