Today’s travel day was one of extremes.
First of all the traveling itself, with my luggage and films it is always a special excitement, because the inspectors in the security areas often do not want to see that it is harmful to the films to be x-rayed. What’s more, my hand luggage is considerably overweight. Many years ago in Venice, my camera case was taken out of my hand to put it in the hold. I didn’t want that to happen again and, thank God, it didn’t happen today. Everything went smoothly.
.
Flying in South America involves a special caution that we are not used to here. Shortly before the flight from La Paz to Lima, we all had to line up our hand luggage away from us. I was worried that heavy and large items would be brought into the hold, but that wasn’t the case, because everyone had to line up all their hand luggage to give the dog the opportunity to sniff for drugs.
.
My body had to endure a lot during the day. Got up at 3:00 am in La Paz, at about 8 degrees with 6 layers, at 4,050 meters. Within 1.5 hours we flew to Lima, where it was 18 degrees and the city is at 100 meters. After waiting 4.5 hours, we took the second flight to Iquitos, in the north of Peru, at an altitude of 100 meters, at 38 degrees and a humidity of 85%.
.
I particularly like that moment when I get off the plane and can smell the foreign air for the first time, feel the warmth and generally perceive the foreignness. In the case of Iquitos it was, as expected, extreme, the door of the plane opened and I immediately had the impression that someone had turned on a hairdryer and was blowing directly into my face, it was 38 degrees. During the cab ride to the hotel, the cab driver spoke at some point about the coming rain, which actually came a few minutes later: as if the shower had been turned on, like from buckets, dogs and cats, of course the water couldn’t run off fast enough, so the streets were more or less flooded. The poor tuktuk drivers, who made a virtue out of their usual misery.
