Cusco, Day 5

Madness! Today was the day of the markets! My lovely hostess took me on her shopping tour, which is characterized by four markets. I was able to get to know a lot of things that I hadn’t known before. Numerous fruits, all of which I will try during my stay, then different ethnic groups, which are also recognizable by their clothing. There are also numerous handicrafts, all of which are beautiful, often decorated with meaningful patterns that relate to the respective people. Other potato varieties alongside countless types of maize, which are processed and eaten in many different ways. The corn soup at lunchtime today was great!

The pictures with the mountains in the background were taken in a suburb of Cusco, in San Jeronimo, about 7 kilometers outside the city, where I went by public transport, which is always a nice adventure.
I was drawn to San Jeronimo by Roberto, who had already sent me photos of his neighborhood before my trip. These situations, which he had photographed for me, appealed to me and I was not disappointed. We strolled through the market with him and spoke to numerous vendors. Roberto also speaks Quechua, the language of the indigenous people, which made it easier to approach them, for example an elderly woman who answered no to my first question as to whether I was allowed to photograph her. Then we got into a bit of a conversation about where she comes from, where the maize for sale is grown … Shortly afterwards, her neighbor intervened and said that the woman could ask for money for the photo. When asked how much this amount could be, she said with a wonderful grin: a million. After general laughter from numerous neighboring booths, she said that a donation would be very nice, which could be as high as I felt.
So a first approach has been made, at the end of next week I will go there with the big camera and then we will find out whether both our ideas for a donation match.
